Finding reliable manufacturers in Mexico is not easy like in Asia. Supplier directories are not particularly reliable and many smaller manufacturers don’t have an online presence. We’re local so understand the nuances of running a business in Mexico.

Most smaller manufacturers here are focused on servicing the South American market and only speak Spanish. Even if you find one, you can seldom just send them a spec and ask for their best price. Business is so much more personal here.

Think of us as your Mexican support team – we’ve got your back!

Database of high quality, reliable suppliers

We set a very high bar for suppliers to register with us. Our focus is on both quality AND consistency of supply. All have signed appropriate NDA, IP Protection, and Supplier Agreements with us to ensure your best interests are protected.

If we’re doing business with them, then you know we’ve invested time and effort to understand their capabilities. You can be confident that any supplier we recommend is robust and will be there for you over the long term.

Pricing and value

We develop long term relationships with our suppliers. An important part of this is understanding their material supply chain and costs that underpin their finished product price.

Personal visits deepen our understanding and we offer help where we can through our own extensive network of raw material suppliers.

This is an integral part of the personal relationships we have developed with suppliers over time, and ensures the price we negotiate for you is the best available in the market.

Pre-production samples

We are very detailed in our approach, working closely with you to ensure we have a detailed spec to discuss with target manufacturers.

We also document “pain points” with you right at the start to ensure critical QA aspects are actually built into your spec. Once we have identified the best supplier, we discuss pricing with you before moving to pre-production samples.

When we’re satisfied, we send you the final sample for approval before production deposits are required. As a result, you have complete control of the process.

Packaging and marketing materials

Display boxes, robust mail-order-proof packaging, instruction books, product inserts, etc. Whatever your requirements, we will ensure all meet your specification and arrange delivery to your supplier.

One of our team will manage this vital part of your final product to ensure your customers are delighted when opening your product for the first time. We will also guide you as to best practice in providing branding and contact details on your packaging that meets all e-commerce platform requirements.

We know customer expectations so well as have managed a large number of e-commerce accounts ourselves since 2017 through a related company –  ZonSupport.com

Quality management

We work with several production inspection companies as feel it’s important for you to have an external overview of the agreed quality standard.

This also adds another layer of due diligence to our management process which ensures you have complete visibility of this vital final step.

As a result, you can be confident that the product shipped to your warehouse meets the agreed standard.

WHY MEXICO

The easiest way to take the pressure out of your supply chain is to manufacture products as close as you can to where you will sell them. China is losing its shine as costs continue to rise and the political tension with the US adds to your risk.

The dramatic increase in shipping costs to get your products to the US coast, let alone landed, makes Mexico your obvious choice.

So what is the trading relationship between the US and Mexico? The change from NAFTA to USCMA in 2020 which governs this relationship makes your decision a slam sunk! Here’s the finer detail…

NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) dates back to 1994. It created a free trade zone between Mexico, the United States, and Canada. This agreement enabled the removal of all quotas on U.S export to Mexico and Canada. Trade with Mexico was beneficial for the U.S. economy as this two-way goods and services trade was intended to help in the creation of U.S. jobs.

Mexico has the third largest trade with the U.S. and is the second-largest export market for U.S. products. The agreement created a free trade area of 454 million people. While there is much debate as to the negative impact on American jobs that went south of the border, American consumers were the winner with lower prices.

The three countries began renegotiating the deal in 2018. USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) emerged with Mexico signing the agreement in 2019. American President Donald Trump signed in 2020 along with Canada.

The agreement is intended to create a balance of trade by enhancing the job opportunities for Americans, hence strengthening the U.S. economy. Farmers, ranchers, and small to medium sized businesses will all benefit from this.

The zero tariffs from NAFTA will remain zero under USMCA. This is significant, give the US tariffs on imports from most other countries on the planet. Physical office requirements have been eliminated and thus business between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico has become easier.

New procedures of e-signatures and self-certification of origin make trade easy for small businesses to trade across the region. Strong intellectual property protection laws are in place to lower the risk of piracy. Copy right protections are extended to 70 years in the USMCA, previously it was 50 years under NAFTA.

All these initiatives are of significant benefit to Private Label brand owners sourcing products in the region.

While there remains much debate as to how this new agreement will work over the medium term, there is no doubt that Mexico provides a great opportunity to replace many of the products made in China, Vietnam, India and elsewhere. There is no mechanism to over throw the provision for zero tariffs which underpins the value of developing long term relationships with suppliers in Mexico. Add to this the ease of visiting your supplier if you wish, just a 2 or 3 hour flight from the US is of significant value. We have even had a client get an order to their US warehouse within 10 days of order.

As a result, Mexico is your next best option if you cannot find a cost effective solution to manufacture your product in the US.

However, finding suppliers in Mexico for your typical e-commerce Private Label product can be challenging. Many smaller scale manufacturers in Mexico do not have websites, nor do they speak English. It’s important to realize their focus, to a large degree, is servicing countries to the south of them! The South American continent offers them significant sales without looking to the north.

You have two options. Get up close and friendly with Google and try to find them through business associations and connections, or engage a specialist company to help you find the right fit for your needs.

We’re just one of many suppliers in this industry, but our focus is on e-commerce products. So, we think we’re your only logical choice if you’ve read this far… Get to the  head of the queue before it’s too late

ABOUT

The principal, Greg Reynolds, is also the owner of YourBizInAsia.com, a supply chain consulting business based in Thailand. Established in 2008, this business works on larger scale projects including automotive, appliances, and plastic injection molding. The team in Thailand overlaps the business in Mexico providing specialist support as required.

The Mexican business is focused on sourcing smaller scale manufacturers to service e-commerce sellers. Many are shifting their focus away from China, Vietnam, and India and headed closer to home as shipping costs have increased dramatically.

In addition, shipping times and massive queues to land products in the US have a significant affect on cashflow with capital tied up for extended periods. These problems that first arose in 2021 are are clearly not going away in a rush! Mexico has been somewhat of a sleeper in the e-commerce world as it’s manufacturing profile is better known for large scale production in automotive, aerospace, appliances, etc.

The underlying challenge with Mexico is that supplier directories are not particularly reliable. Indeed, many of these businesses don’t have any online presence. In addition, they’re more used to servicing demand in the South American region and speak little, if any English.

So, there is a lot of digging deep that has to go on along with personal one-on-one visits. Even if you find these smaller scale manufacturers, you can seldom just send them a spec and ask for their best price as with China!

Supply chains are always challenging and regardless of the country, the fundamentals remain the same:

1. Finding robust manufacturers who allow external monitoring of their processes

2. Having visibility of their BOM (Bill of Materials) so you understand their cost drivers

3. Legally Binding Factory Agreements

4. Intellectual Property Protection

5. Critical Path Production Management

6. Focus on QA during and post-production

The last part of the puzzle is shipping your products to the US. The border process is simple but complex in a way so you need robust partners who understand the finer detail . We have a specialist who overseas this to ensure a seamless process across the Mexico/US border.
